Day 2Exploration of the remote cave of Barton Creek

Like most subterranean caverns in the Mayan territory, these were used for ceremonial purposes and the entrance to the infra world or Xibalba.

This is a relaxed but exciting canoe trip inside a mountain on an ancient waterway. At the entrance, we board our canoes, switch on our headlights, and start to slowly paddle into the cave passage (for around 1 mile). Observing massive grand ceilings, as well as numerous formations and stalactites and stalagmites. While floating deeper, we will learn about the geology, archaeology, and Mayan history of these caves. After exploring, we will turn our canoes around and flow back to the park and complete our expedition with a refreshing swim and a homemade picnic lunch. Afterward, we will return to our hotel and have free time to explore by ourselves the beauty of our surroundings. Overnight in a comfortable hotel in San Ignacio.

Breakfast and morning transportation until Guatemala, border crossing and customs until Tikal, and the exploration of this impressive sacred Mayan archeological site (a UNESCO World Heritage) was one of the most powerful Mayan kingdoms. Tikal is a place full of magic whose history begins around 2,000 years B.C., and today, archaeologists are still working on the site, finding day to day more evidence of our ancient and wise civilization.

In Tikal, we will connect with its mysticism, divine magic and decipher the greatest mysteries and enigmas of this impressive civilization as we walk through its dense jungle. Among its remarkable structures excels the Great Jaguar (or Temple 1), an icon for the Mayas, located in the Central Acropolis, Temple 2 (or the Masks), The Lost World, the Window Palace, and the Temple 4 (or the two-headed serpent) that it’s one of the tallest pre-Colombian structures of all the Americas. Lunch and afternoon transfer to la Isla de Flores to have free time to explore the small but charming island located in the middle of the crystal clear waters of Lake Peten Itza. Dinner and overnight in a comfortable Hotel in Isla de Flores.

Place where we’re going to relax, jump on the water, lunch and continue on our way until Quirigua, a privileged Mayan city developed next to the Rio Grande or Motagua where the jade births are found, the sacred stone for the Mayans.

Quirigua is an impressive archaeological UNESCO World Heritage Site that is part of the travelers’ itinerary with knowledge of our culture and good taste for the ancient arts. Exploring this sacred site home of the biggest stelas (actually books written in stone that will tell us the site’s history) in the Mayan world. Excelling its famous stela E with almost 11 meters high and the only mindblowing zoomorph P that will leave you with your mouth open.

To continue on our way until our neighbors’ brother country of Honduras; border and customs crossing until Copan Ruinas Town, a small but lovely town located around 15 km. from the border and just next to the archaeological site. Dinner and overnight in a comfortable Hotel in Copan.

Home of the only staircase with hieroglyphics that includes the most extended text in the Mayan world. A sacred site where we can appreciate the maximum artistic expressions of the Mayans, with the multidimensional stone carving for the elaboration of impressive stelae and altars.

Overnight in a comfortable hotel in Antigua.

Meals: breakfast.
Lodging: Hotel (Antigua).
Activities: Antigua walking tour.

Day 7Lake Atitlan with its social projects, Mayan workshops of San Juan, and the healing temazcal (the Mayan sauna) of San Marcos La Laguna:

Aldous Huxley’s described Atitlan as “too much of a good thing, it touches the limit of the permissibly picturesque” and we know that you will just love it too.

Early morning breakfast and the beginning of our journey through the Mayan highlands. Most known as the sectors of our indigenous Mayan culture alive and surrounded by beautiful landscapes full of mountains, indigenous communities, and all kinds of crops until the town of Panajachel. It is located on the shores of Atitlan and the place where we will take our boat and cross the Lake’s crystalline waters until the small, picturesque, and charming town of San Juan La Laguna. Lunch and a cultural afternoon, full of ancestral knowledge by visiting and learning from their community social projects, focused on preserving alternative and natural medicine, primitivist painting, natural dyeing, and beekeeping.

With far more to do than you can fit in just one day, we will end our epic day with the holistic and healing town of San Marcos la Laguna. Where we will have the opportunity (late afternoon) to experience the Mayan sauna or Temazcal (the house of hot stones) whose ancestral purpose is therapeutic, seeking relaxation and detoxification of our body and calm for our mind until finding inner peace. Actually, after everything that we had done before, it was time to relax and pamper ourselves. Overnight in a comfortable Hotel in Atitlan.

Just because today is the last day of our journey, it doesn’t mean we’re slowing down.

Early breakfast and paddleboard on the crystalline and calm waters of the Lake surrounded by its majestic 03 volcanoes (San Pedro, Atitlan, and Toliman), being able to experience the day-to-day life of the inhabitants of the Lake, standing out among them their multiple farmers and fishers. Followed by the Cerro Tzankujil hyke (a local sacred and protected area) for our fire and cocoa ceremony guided by a Mayan elder spiritual guide or Aj Q’ij for us to connect with the spirit of the cocoa (worldwide known as a powerful heart opener). And to learn more about ourselves by our nahual (or alter ego) reading.
