Many fascinating ancient and contemporary indigenous celebrations take place across the Mayan lands, and timing up with them during your journey can make a truly unforgettable and remarkable trip.

In Guatemala (the heart of the Maya world) is celebrated “big time” the world-famous Day of the Dead (days to honor and celebrate all those loved ones who are no longer with us) where excels the unique gastronomy of the season and the giant kites (in the village cemeteries of Sumpango and Santiago) which are majestic art pieces full of messages for the “beyond”, with a profound spiritual background and handmade by the Mayan indigenous kaqchikel communities throughout the year to exhibit them only during this special occasion.

So if you and your family or community want to experience these epic celebrations of native indigenous peoples in original towns with unique and selected activities, plus the highlights of the country by visiting the beautiful colonial city and World Heritage of Antigua and the Pacaya active volcano, this one is a must!

And by the way, remember to pack your costume, because you are going to have the opportunity to party for “el dia de brujas” (Halloween) in Antigua Guatemala and its unique nightlife.

Your Itinerary

DAY 01: October 30th.Welcome to Guatemala (Heart of the Mayan world) and Antigua transfer.

Welcome by your team at the Aurora International Airport (GUA) and transportation to the cosmopolitan and colonial City of La Antigua Guatemala (UNESCO World Heritage Site), a “pueblo magico” full of charm and probably the most visited one in the country.

Free time to explore your colonial surroundings (try to arrive before midday and enjoy the sunset in Antigua with tea, coffee, or drinks), begin to connect with the local people and international community, and prepare yourself for your upcoming transformative journey.

Meals: Welcome dinner.

Lodging: Luxury Boutique Hotel Antigua.

Activities: Welcome transfer and sightseeing.

Visit a local cafe and try probably one of the best coffees you have ever tried, take photos of its unique stores, the Calle del Arco (Arch street) and El Mirador El Cerro de la Cruz (with a fantastic panoramic view of the city).

At night, a lounge/bar hopping of the trendy hot spots of the colonial city for you to experience its party scene and celebrate Halloween (but remember, don’t go to bed too late, because tomorrow is El Dia De Los Muertos).

Meals: Breakfast.

Lodging: Luxury Boutique Hotel Antigua.

DAY 03: November 1st.Celebration of “El dia de los muertos” the day of the dead with the giant kites of Sumpango and Santiago

Breakfast and a free and easy morning to continue later on with your drive through the highlands for the celebration of the day of the dead by visiting the cemeteries of the indigenous towns of Santiago and Sumpango and its mind-blowing giant kites.

According to the different legends and the oral tradition of the Mayan people, these kites are raised to the sky as the “channel or path” for the spirits to unite with us for a period of 24 hours, starting from the first of November (at three in the afternoon) and energetic moments in time and space where the veil between two realities (life and death) becomes thinner.

A ritualistic day full of very significant traditions and the result of the unification between the Mayan ancestral beliefs (with a very spiritual meaning especially for the Kaqchikel Mayan community) and those brought during the time of the European invasion.

Meals: Breakfast.

Lodging: Luxury Boutique Hotel Antigua.

Activities: Day of the death experience (visiting Zumpango and Santiago Zacatepequez).

DAY 04: November 2nd.Pacaya active volcano; also known as the torch of the Americas and your lava encounters.

Typical breakfast and your transfer to the pacific coast until the Pacaya Volcano and Calderas Lagoon national park, so get ready for nature and adventure by hiking its interpretive trails of massive, rugged dried lava fields, magma stones, and steaming boilers (scorching). The volcano is surrounded by magnificent and breathtaking views of the Agua, Fuego & Acatenango volcanoes.

This hike is the least challenging volcano hike, but that doesn’t mean that’s easy. It’s perfect for a group of travelers and families in search of a hot adventure.

Connect with this impressive volcano’s energy, and if we are lucky enough (and believe us that you will), the Pacaya and Acatenango (both active volcanoes) will set up a lava show for you! Because just recently, Pacaya has become more active again.

Drive back to Antigua, and because it is your last night in Guatemala, you are going to have the perfect time celebrating life and transformation with a delicious goodbye dinner.

Meals: All.

Lodging: Luxury Boutique Hotel Antigua.
